SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH TRAINING

THE PROBLEM

40% of Nepalese girls are married before their 18th birthday and 7% are married before the age of 15.

23.9% of women in Nepal do not have access to contraception.

Almost a quarter of women in Nepal give birth before the age of 18 and nearly half before they are 20 years old.

Lack of contraception, early marriage and the resulting early sexual debut can lead to a number of potentially adverse outcomes- these include unplanned pregnancy and exposure to STIs.

Providing healthcare in the most rural parts of Nepal is challenging for a variety of reasons- one of which includes a lack of permanent clinicians.

According to WHO initiatives 'Global Strategy on human resources for health 2030', more pragmatic solutions to this problem include training local healthcare professionals to provide ongoing healthcare. They can pass on this training to other local HCPs to create a sustainable chain of healthcare provision.

A SOLUTION: SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH TRAINING

Health Partnership Nepal has been providing training for Community Nurses, Auxillary Nurses, Midwives, Student Health Care professionals and University Students in concepts around Sexual and Reproductive Health. We facilitate a ‘train-the-trainer’ approach - allowing those who have partaken in training in the past to deliver the training to a new set of professionals annually.

The subjects taught in the training include:

The aim of the training is to empower professionals working with women to provide education around reproductive health.

Contraception

Menstrual physiology with education around hygiene practices

Unsafe Abortion

Sexually Transmitted Infections

SUCCESS

So far, 47 women have been trained and we continue to facilitate this training in a sustainable way through empowering previous trainees to lead the training annually.

WHAT NEXT?

HPN aims to deliver this programme in May 2020, alongside a formal evaluation of the teaching programme.
